The Labour-run Leicester City Council, and City Mayor Sir Peter Soulsby have taken the decision to axe the Diwali Light Switch-On, an annual event that has run for over 40 years in Leicester. The local economy, culture and community will suffer as a result of this decision, and I want to make sure that residents' opposition is heard loud and clear.
The economic consequences of this are huge - this event brings approximately £3.5 million to the local economy. To cancel the event for the sake of £120,000 will have a detrimental impact on local residents and local businesses alike. We want our local economy to thrive, and cancelling the Diwali Light Switch-On will have the opposite effect.
If you believe Sir Peter Soulsby has made the wrong call, please sign my petition below. Once the petition has reached 1500 Leicester signatures, the results will be shared with the City Mayor's Office.
